What Makes The Cozy Method Extremely Beneficial?
What is the suffix in the word action? To answer that, we need to understand how English spelling works.
English spelling represents meaning — not just sound.
act → action
The base act keeps its meaning ("to do"), and the suffix is <ion>.
act + ing → acting
act + ed → acted
act + ion → action
This is what your child will learn to understand — and much more.
Why some students keep guessing –and nothing seems to stick.
Some students keep sounding out words–but still struggle to recognize and remember them. This pattern is often described as surface dyslexia, where students have difficulty storing how words are spelled.
When instruction focuses only on sound, it can leave gaps. English spelling does not represent sound alone–it also represents meaning.
That’s why we teach students how words are built. By working with word families, meaningful connections, and structure, students develop a more reliable way to understand, spell, and remember words.
Instead of memorizing isolated words or guessing, students learn how spelling works–on purpose.
This aligns with research on how words are stored in memory (Ehri; Kilpatrick), which show that fluent reading depends on forming stable representations of words and not relying on sounding out alone.
Grounded in research on orthographic mapping and word recognition, including work by Linnea Ehri and David Kilpatrick.
